As Springs Transitions to Summer, Consider This Tip
June 9, 2020How COVID-19 Has Made the Smart Thermostat a Must-Have
July 20, 2020As spring turns into summer, the weather changes toward more hot and humid days. And with these changes in weather, we transition from heating to cooling our homes. Here’s everything you should know about using your thermostat when the transitional spring weather turns into the heat of summer.
Upgrade With Programmable Thermostats
Upgrading your home with a programmable thermostat is one of the best things you can do this season. Not only will your home be more consistently comfortable, but you can save as much as 10 percent on your energy bills. The savings can quickly add up and make the investment worthwhile.
Tips to Optimize Your Thermostat
With a programmable thermostat installed, you can set the temperature in your home for specific purposes. You may want to have a much different temperature when you are home and active, as opposed to sleeping times and times when you are away from the house. These small differences can account for a substantial overall savings in energy. Here are our tips for the best summer energy efficiency for your home thermostat:
- Determine a suitable baseline temperature for when you are at home and most active. A good recommendation to start with is 78 degrees in summer.
- Set a higher temperature for times when you are sleeping or usually away at school or work. Try 75-85 degrees for these times.
- Experiment and adjust. Find what’s comfortable for your household, then experiment by raising the summer temperatures incrementally. Make small adjustments of only one or two degrees at a time to not overtax your system and still stay comfortable.
- Use ceiling fans, standing fans, and passive cooling methods like closing curtains during the day to help the home feel cooler and more comfortable without increasing your energy usage.
